Editor's Verdict:

Don't be put off by the glary blue, green and red of the homepage - it looks like someone has killed and skinned a rubix cube - once you get into the website itself you'll find this is actually one of the best organised and cleverly thought out rental websites around. It's easy to find your way around and everything is clearly laid out and simple to understand even if you don't usually do this sort of thing online. The website provides a good search engine for finding the films you want and also provides personalised recommendations from members who have proven to have similar tastes to your own, which is a useful way of discovering gems you never knew existed. You get a definite sense that this operation is fuelled by a love of movies as much as the need to run a profitable business. Though smaller than its rivals, Movie Shack has a good reputation for responding flexibly to customer suggestions and requests and continually evolving to provide the best service possible.

Their range of movies is wide, not quite as wide as that of DVD Unlimited but definitely wide enough for most tastes - you'd be very hard pressed to catch them out. The amount of information you'll find about each film is fantastic and another plus is that Movie Shack count both discs in two-disc sets as part of the same rental, so you're never deprived of those extra features that can often provide the icing on your DVD-watching experience. There is also a customisable content filter to prevent younger members of your family from being corrupted by premature exposure to rude sex, nasty violence or cuss words. Such thoughtful touches are indicative of the high price Move Shack put on customer satisfaction, as is largely borne out by online feedback. Whilst there is no telephone support line, Movie Shack prides themselves in responding to email enquiries almost instantaneously. Few people have a bad word to say about the service Movie Shack provides.

The basic idea is much like any other queue-based online rental system. You compile a queue of which films you want to see in what order and they then send you however many DVDs your subscription entitles you to in the post. You can take as long as you like to watch them but the sooner you're done with them and send them back the sooner Movie Shack will send you the next batch of DVDs. Delivery should take no more than a day or two - usually with online rental services your location is a factor in how quickly you will receive DVDs, but Movie Shack have a policy of using Fastpost for customers outside the Auckland area so geography is not a problem even if you live way out in the Shire. The amount of time you have to languish without any new DVDs to watch can be further reduced by informing Movie Shack when you have posted the films you have finished with back to them so they can send you the next batch right away without having to wait for returning disks to appear. This is one reason why Movie Shack are generally considered among the fastest online rental operators in the country.

There is a wide choice of 6 packages available, each of which is roughly one dollar dearer per month than that of our number one pick in New Zealand, DVD Unlimited (possibly because DVD unlimited lowered their prices a few months ago by one dollar, perhaps for this very reason). There is a free trial available, but shorter than that offered by DVD Unlimited (there's that name again) and only on their most popular package.

The service Movie Shack provides has much to recommend it - really well designed and thought-out website (despite appearances, no rubix cubes were harmed in the making of this homepage) and service, quick delivery and returns and only very slightly higher prices than the industry leader. A good, solid choice.
