Editor's Verdict:

Fatso appear to have recently bought out their major rivals DVDUnlimited.co.nz and MovieShack.co.nz, increasing their number of titles and reducing the cost of their subscription plans. As a result of these recent improvements, they have moved to pole position in our New Zealand DVD rental websites category.

The Fatso website is tastefully designed and easy to use, making it quick and painless to find out how their service works and sign up for a suitable subscription. Films you already know you want to see are easy to locate and there are decent lists and recommendations to help you find future favourites you don't yet know you like. The amount of information provided on each title is extremely generous, encompassing basic plot and disc details (which include summaries of bonus features) as well as expert and member reviews and ratings. Everything you need to build up a decent DVD rental list is here, not only that but the experience of doing so is also a lot of fun.

For many years, Fatso have led the way in terms of blu-ray release and has had a very wide range of movies and TV series. Now, with the acquisition of their rivals DVD Unlimited and Movie Shack, they have accumulated the largest collection in New Zealand, with over 22,000 DVD titles.

Fatso not only stock films and TV series, they also rent out games, and at the same price as the DVDs themselves, which is good as rental companies often charge more for games. Another member benefit is discounted movie tickets - you can get 33% off at Skycity cinemas. Customer service is also generally rated as excellent.

There is a good range of limited and unlimited membership packages to choose from, three of which come with a free trial. Their subscription prices have fallen dramatically since merging with their rivals, as have the number of DVDs you can rent at a time. Fatso no longer offers the all-you-can-eat options to have up to 8-DVDs at a time, instead offering up to 4 DVDs at a time. It says that the most popular subscription option is 3 DVDs at a time, so presumably the 4 DVDs at a time option should satisfy 90% of people out there. Those who had been indulging in more than 4 DVDs at a time should probably be considering slimming down a little anyway.

The service itself is much like that of any other queue-based online rental system. You compile a movie queue, listing which films you want to see in what order, and they then send you however many DVDs your subscription entitles you to in the post. You can take as long as you like to watch them but the sooner you send them back the sooner Fatso will send you the next batch of DVDs. Note that you won't necessarily always receive DVDs in the exact order they appear on your queue as sometimes all the copies of more popular titles will already be out, but this is an aspect of any queue-based rental system that is hard to avoid, although with Fatso this is somewhat mitigated by their "Get Now Movies" feature (see below).

Delivery should take no more than a day or two - usually with online rental services your location is a factor in how quickly you will receive DVDs but Fatso always use Fastpost (although they should really call it Fatspost), so it won't take long to get your movies even if you live in the dark land of Mordor (in which case you're probably evil and only want to rent films in which all of the characters are played by Eddie Murphy in a variety of hilarious transgender fatsuits. I mean, somebody must be renting Norbit...). The amount of time you have to languish without any new DVDs to watch can be reduced by informing Fatso when you have posted back the films you have finished with so they can send you the next batch right away without having to wait for returning discs to appear. All in all, Fatso are surprisingly quick on their feet when it comes to delivery times.

An innovative aspect of Fatso's service is that if you hate deferred gratification and love bad grammar, you can use their new "Get Now Movies" feature, which allows you to specify that you want to a particular film delivered on their very next dispatch run - for a price. This is clever because it removes some of the randomness which is endemic in any queue-based rental system.

After gobbling up its rivals, Fatso now has the largest stockpile of DVD titles in New Zealand. It has introduced a new range of low cost (limited and unlimited) subscription packages to suit a broad range of tastes and habits and continues to offer a very fast delivery service. It now stands supreme in the New Zealand DVD rental arena. So why not click on the link below and sign up for a free trial!
